Meet Betsy G. Cohen

Native Washingtonian Betsy Garcete Cohen is a study in stunning contrasts. The easy-going demeanor of the designer behind the CEO Skirt is more free spirit than boss lady, and her drop-dead gorgeous looks are more pin-up girl than corporate maven. But the petite, scarlet lipped (at all times, I might add) founder of Zophia is a woman with a mission, which in her own words, is “to help women embrace their natural silhouette and feel confident.” As a Latina woman growing up surrounded by strong and fashionable female figures (she named the brand after her grandmother who also happened to be a talented seamstress), Cohen knows a little something about that. Meet Michelle Watson

I first learned about the MICHI brand, unsurprisingly, in a fashion magazine. I remember being struck by the minimal (yet carefully placed to be eye-catching and sexy) mesh details on otherwise simple black leggings. My introduction to Michelle Watson, the Canadian woman behind the brand, came during a trip to New York City when I happened to see that she was hosting a trunk show at Bandier (one of my favorite places to shop for activewear in the city, by the way). She could not have been more helpful and kind, and I left with a few key pieces (these leggingsthis sports bra, and a top similar to this one) that became the building blocks of my current MICHI collection.

I’m honored to have been asked to co-host Femme Fatale DC’s first ladies-only networking party and fashion show later this week.  Femme Fatale DC’s founder Yasmin Radbod is on a mission to bring together local creative women in various industries through a series of parties in a fun, informal setting. The focus of this first party is fashion, and it will showcase the work of the amazingly talented local designers and stylists featured below.  Click here for more information on the event and to purchase tickets. Your Soles Matter

The Do’s and Dont’s of Choosing Shoes.  I am going to add a provision in my will stipulating, among other things, the outfit that I am to be buried in.  I will be very specific about the shoes I am to wear because let’s face it, my arrival at the pearly gates is not the time for a faux pas, or rather, a pas taken in poorly chosen footwear. Meet Virginia Arrisueño

Virginia Arrisueño, the pretty, pint-sized dynamo behind the DeNada accessories line, is one of those women who makes you stop and wonder, “How does she do it?” When I first met her in her lovely studio, her laid-back, soft spoken manner and quick smile made it all look so easy – you know, to just start up a fashion business in Washington DC and be killing it, be happily married to a fellow artist who also happens to be the love of your life, and to have an adorable son who is your spitting image. But the fact is that under that cool exterior is a woman who is laser focused on her vision, and who works tirelessly to bring it to life. Read More »

Meet Marlene Hu Aldaba

I have a confession to make: I have a girl crush on Marlene Hu Aldaba. Let me explain. Marlene embodies so many of the traits that I appreciate the most in women: great style, creativity, intelligence, originality, a sense of humor…I could go on. But what I really admire about Marlene is that she has managed to build a mini-empire of style in a city that, before her arrival at least, was more preppy than fashion forward.

Meet the Family

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I spend a lot of time in dark rooms listening to really loud music, riding bikes that don’t take me anywhere. If you think I’m crazy, you’ve probably never taken a class at SoulCycle (and if that’s you, here is a little something to bring you out from that rock you must be living under). Read More »
