If you follow me on Instagram, you have often seen me joke about the fact that I am not a winter person. Like not even close. So you can imagine my dismay when my son and I learned that one of the worst winter storms in decades, the so called “bomb cyclone,” was set to hit NYC the day we were to arrive there. Of course my biggest concern? Wardrobe (did you think I was going to say something mature like “safety’?)
I had made plans to shoot with one of my favorite NYC photographers and bloggers, Allie Provost (see Allie’s adorable blog here) and since I cancelled the last time bad weather occurred, I really couldn’t do it again. I didn’t want to pack a huge suitcase though, so I opted for some of my trusty and packable layering pieces.I have had this cocoon coat from Isabel Marant for years (a similar style is linked below), One of the best things about it is that the deconstructed shape adapts to anything that I put underneath it, and allows for several layers, at that! The gnarled wool is super warm, and the grey with black highlights is a nice change from my usual monochrome.
The black and white Gucci bag adds a nice pop of color, and elevates the otherwise “toddler chic” feel of this “weather appropriate look.” I borrowed an oversized cashmere turtleneck sweater from my husband that kept me warm and cozy despite the 17 degree temps (similar style linked below).
These leather leggings are my go-to whenever I travel to colder temperatures. They are so versatile because they can be dressed up or down, and it’s amazing how well they have held up (I’ve had them for four years – actually probably need to replace them soon). They are totally practical, but add just the right amount of edge to even the most basic outfit.
These snow boots from Isabel Marant are the only ones that I actually enjoy wearing (compared to the these snow boots from Sorel that I was lucky to have during the actual blizzard). They are so furry and comfortable, and the hidden wedge adds just a little it of height, which is nice if you are petite like me.
I never leave the house without a hat of some kind in winter, and this beanie with the playful pom pom is one of my favorites. It’s made of cashmere so it’s super warm. I wore my husband’s sunglasses because you know, it’s a blogger thing (to be fair, the snow was actually really bright). The bottom line is, when it is this cold, comfort takes precedence over fashion – but not style.
