Lady in Red

A few years ago, my husband and I were having Christmas dinner at a very fancy restaurant in Paris, and I saw a woman wearing the most beautiful red silk dress I have ever seen. I immediately recognized it as one of Alessandro Michele’s designs (see a similar iteration here), looked at my husband, and whispered “Gucci” with a sigh. I had seen similar styles worn by bloggers on Instagram, but I always love to see pieces like these in real life, worn by real (LOL) people.

I never forgot that dress! The color, the sleeves, the ruffles…magnifico! So imagine my thrill when I found this little number on the sales rack of one of my favorite places to shop for treasures, H&M. Not only was it the only one in stock (it must have been a return), it was my size (although I probably would have kept it even if it wasn’t – blouse, maybe?). The real treat came when I got to the register and saw the price – $15!! Gotta’ love a good bargain.

Since that dinner in Paris, I have acquired a certain number of Gucci items (including my very own dream dress). I had fun mixing high and low for this look with the addition of my namesake, the now iconic Sylvie bag, as an homage to the designer.

I decided to wear my nude sandals for this look to keep the focus on the dress and make it more of a sexy date night look,, but I would also wear it with boots or a great pair of stilettos. I love the key hole detail in the back – you know how I feel about making dramatic exits.

I know “fast fashion” has a negative connotation for many people, but I have to say that I appreciate brands that give me access to bold, interesting pieces without breaking the bank. I definitely don’t approve of knock-offs, but I feel no shame in mixing designer and designer inspired pieces. After all, it’s not what (or who) you wear, but HOW you do it that matters.
